There are over 150 languages spoken in New Jersey. But we need just one voice -- YOURS! -- to speak up for Language Access.

Bill S2459/A3837 would require that all state government agencies in the Executive Branch that provide direct services provide written translation and oral interpretation in the top spoken languages by Limited English Proficient New Jerseyans.

Lack of Language Access is hurting New Jersey. Lack of access to timely, accurate information causes costly emergencies that cost the State money and cost residents their lives.

New Jersey is more diverse than we've ever been. The diverse growth of our population is not a "trend" -- our communities are here to stay and we need services that speak to who we are.
New Jersey has led on expansive, inclusive policies before. If we want those programs to have their intended impact, we must make sure they are accessible and people have confidence accessing them in their preferred language.
We can't wait any longer. Other states with similar populations already have language access plans in place. Those states recognize that when timely information doesn't reach communities, it costs the state money, time, and most importantly, lives.

This message will be sent to your representatives in the NJ Assembly as well as Governor Murphy. The bill has PASSED the Senate!

As a constituent in your district, I urge you to sponsor and pass Language Access Bill S2459 / A3837. This bill has already passed the Senate! Without your attention in the Assembly, Limited English Proficient New Jerseyans are being left behind. Over 40% of New Jersey's children come from immigrant families and a quarter of New Jersey's households speak a language other than English. In recent years, New Jersey has made enormous strides in lowering barriers for immigrant integration. Critical wins like eliminating immigration status considerations when obtaining Driver’s, Professional, and/or Occupational licenses, Medicaid coverage for all children, and a growing range of status neutral social, education, and health programs have set New Jersey apart as an emerging leader on inclusive policies. However, many New Jerseyans who are eligible for these programs remain excluded because of barriers to linguistic access or discomfort asserting their rights at the point of service. When government services don't speak for the people, our communities become isolated and vulnerable to (preventable!) crises. Lack of timely, accurate information causes costly emergencies that cost the State money and cost residents their lives. Language Access is worth investing in, our state can't afford the costly disasters and disparities that have been a hallmark of our past. Do you support S2459/ A3837?
